like theyve been doing for the past five years, Singaporeans gave
their hearts, their time and their money to the Presidents Challenge
2005. More than 40 participating organisations were involved in this
years Presidents Challenge. About $8.5 million was raised for Presidents
Challenge 2005, exceeding the target of $8 million.
An appreciation ceremony hosted by President Nathan to thank the participating
organisations was held at the Istana on 19 August. For the first time,
the event was held jointly with another ceremony to pay tribute to
outstanding social service sector volunteers. Said Mr Lee Bock Guan,
President of the Singapore Buddhist Lodge, which was one of the four
recipients of the Presidents Social Service Award.

"Being a Buddhist organisation, SBL strives
to realise the Buddhist virtue of equality. Hence, extending a helping
hand to the needy, regardless of race and religion, is naturally our
way of life. May this achievement be a motivation to spur us to greater
heights and encourage us to continue to give our best to serve our
multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-racial society."

The Presidents Challenge also saw participation from private and
public sector organisations, institutions and schools, as well as
thousands of individuals and informal groups and communities.
