*MAP (Multi-Million Dollar Award Programme)
is an incentive scheme to reward medal winners in the
Olympic, Asian, Commonwealth and SEA Games. The awards
vary in amount for the respective Games represented and
are sponsored by the Singapore Totalisator Board. Awards
are given to the athletes and not to the respective national
sport associations. |

Now that the competitions are over, it's
time for Team Singapore to celebrate and party |

t
was certainly an evening of glamour and honour when 67 gold-medal
winners from 13 sports gathered for the 23rd Southeast Asia
(SEA) Games MAP* Awards and Team Singapore Appreciation Dinner
held on 6 January 2006 at the Ministry of Sound.
The awards were presented by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong,
who was the Guest-of-Honour for the evening. Also on hand to
congratulate our sportsmen and sportswomen on their sterling
performances were Mr Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence and
President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC),
and Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development,
Youth and Sports.
Said Dr Balakrishnan, “Team Singapore performed remarkably at
the 23rd SEA Games. They not only hauled 42 gold medals but
also broke 6 SEA Games records. Half of our 367 athletes
returned with a medal. What is even more impressive
is that for more than one-third of these medalists, this was
their first SEA Games.”
Moving forward, Dr Balakrishnan added that the focus now will
be on grooming the most promising athletes for the Asian and
Commonwealth Games, and beyond. He is also confident that the
good showing at the SEA Games will spur our athletes to new
heights of glory.
